Have you ever heard of the Reticular Activating System (RAS)? It’s a bundle of nerves at our brainstems that filters out unnecessary information to allow more important information to get through. When the RAS deems something important, like an idea, it seeks out things that support that idea and filters out things that do not support that idea. The RAS is impartial; when something is deemed as important, it goes on a search and find mission. It searches for anything that is that and eliminates or edits anything that is not that.
At CrossFit Final Call, we believe that the RAS can be used skillfully to help individuals get “unstuck” from old thought patterns and achieve their goals. By using language in conjunction with the RAS, we can adjust what we focus on and bring something into focus or take something out of focus. It’s like a pair of binoculars – by changing the key words we use, we can adjust our perspective, perception, and opinion.
By adjusting our language and breath, we can train our RAS to seek out the things that support our positive mindset and filter out the things that don’t. This can help us achieve our goals and create a more positive and fulfilling life.
